This
is a great clinic because we get to teach so much more to the students with
this format. As a two part instruction program, we include all
the content of the QuickStart clinic and add additional
rescue drills. These drills include being able to self rescue when
capsized on a body of water, performing a controlled wet exit from a skirted
kayak, buddy assisted rescues including Hand of God, T Rescue, T X Rescue and
Paddle Assisted Rescue. In addition, an overview of the C to C and Sweep rolls
are demonstrated.
The first session of this 2 part clinic is spent in a classroom
setting (2 hours) in which an instructor presents information on
logistics, safety, etiquette, and personal equipment. The video,
"The Kayakers Edge" is shown in part to initiate and facilitate the
learning process of correct stoke mechanics. In addition, we will cover some of
the safety requirements as well as exploring proper fit of your PFD, entering
and exiting a kayak and the proper way to hold and use a paddle, using the
actual equipment in the classroom setting. This allows more time for actual
paddling during the on water portion of this program. The on water session
includes learning and practicing the proper stroke mechanics to make your kayak
turn, stop, go backwards and go forward.
This is an introductory program and is
suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The next progression is
the Eskimo Roll clinic.
